Digital Transformation Playbook – Turning Research into a Practical Tool
Turning complex research and strategy into something visually engaging and actionable.
Overview
A Finnish public organisation that supports companies' innovation and international growth launched an initiative to help Finnish industries understand what it means to become digital-native.
I joined as a Service and UX Designer, co-developing a playbook: a practical and visually engaging framework that helps companies connect strategy, technology and culture through a digital-native lens.
Challenge
Many established Finnish companies wanted to become more agile and data-driven but struggled to move from high-level strategy to real, actionable change.
There was a clear need for a hands-on, story-driven tool that could:
Translate abstract digitalisation goals into practical guidance.
Showcase lessons from truly digital-native companies.
Help business leaders reflect on their own organisation's digital maturity.
The challenge was to create something that was not another "digital transformation report", but an inspiring and functional playbook that companies could actively use.
Approach
Content Mapping – Analysed research reports and interviews to identify key messages and themes.
Framework Design – Developed the overall structure: three main chapters guiding readers from awareness to action.
Visual Concept Creation – Designed the key visuals to illustrate core concepts in an engaging way.
Iteration & Feedback – Collaborated with researchers and content creators to refine tone, layout and flow for accessibility and clarity.
Finalisation & Production – Prepared the playbook for publication, ensuring visual consistency and practical usability.
Outcome
Published playbooks that companies and public programmes use as learning tools.
A clear and accessible framework that turns complex research into practical reflection and design exercises.
Enhanced understanding of digital maturity as a combination of customer focus, technology and culture, not just infrastructure.
Impact & Reflection
This project brought together everything I love about design: structure, storytelling and collaboration. It showed how design can turn complexity into clarity, not by simplifying it away, but by making it understandable, actionable and inspiring.
It remains one of my favourite projects because it connects strategy with meaning, helping organisations see their own potential through design. The published playbook can be found at Business Finland's website
